In November 2015, two thermal oil fire accidents occurred in Wujin and Liyang, Changzhou respectively. The heat transfer oil fire accident in Wujin Chemical Plant occurred in the waste boiler. With the flow of heat transfer oil, the fire continued to spread. Firefighters immediately sent two foam guns to extinguish the fire. After about an hour of rescue, the danger was eliminated. The main reason is that during the dismantling and welding of the old boiler, the heat transfer oil pipe was accidentally welded through, causing sparks to ignite the heat transfer oil. The fire accident in a chemical plant in Liyang was caused by the rupture of the heat transfer oil pipe. The leaked heat transfer oil quickly burned when encountering an open fire, and the fire was especially fierce. The firefighters immediately dispatched foam guns to control the fire according to the on-site situation. After three hours, the danger was eliminated.

Although both accidents were fortunately extinguished with the full efforts of firefighters and did not cause any casualties, the occurrence of the accidents not only affects the normal production and operation of the enterprise, but also relates to property and safety. Therefore, in order to ensure the normal, safe, and stable operation of the heat transfer oil system, we need to consider multiple factors, including the quality of the heat transfer oil product, the reasonable design of the heat transfer oil system, and daily safety usage standards.

The ideal heat transfer oil should have high flash point, high self ignition point, good fluidity, low residual carbon, high heat transfer efficiency, wide applicability, and good thermal stability.

In addition, improper design and installation of the heat transfer oil heating system can lead to uneven flow velocity of the heat transfer oil in the furnace tube, resulting in local overheating during operation, which can cause aging and deterioration of the heat transfer oil product.

Meanwhile, daily safe use is the guarantee for the safe operation of the thermal oil system. If the operation is not carried out according to the regulations, abnormal phenomena such as overheating and overpressure of the system cannot be detected in a timely manner, or corresponding measures are not taken during emergency shutdown, it will directly affect the quality and service life of the heat transfer oil, leading to deterioration of the heat transfer oil and coking inside the furnace tube.
